No problem, they can start off by writing newspaper articles. Borneo Post will publish anything regarding biotech/biology that are interesting written by universities or colleges. One of the previous tutor did wrote and published in Borneo post. It was a very simple article describing his opinion about biotech. Just write to them beforehand and try to make up some form of arrangement.

we had been doing hands-on learning from field techniques [now called field ecology] to molecular techniques and FYP to MSc [i.e. students decide the FYP & MSc titles etc]; make presentation and i asked difficult questions to every students including those under my supervision. i make them write papers and when published you can see the big smiles on their face. so they're empowered and that is what student-centered or active learning all about.

can it be done with the younger matrik students??

The foundation of Puan Aida and Dr Ruhana's class was laid by previous lecturers handling it. Dr Ruhana and Puan Aida only came, take over and FOLLOW what was done previously by DZ lecturers before they went for studies. So the design of the class was from DZ not both of them. Maybe you want to ask around who set up the working protocol and all the neccesary equiptment needded for that class. I was the first batch of students and later was one of the lab coordinator for 2 semesters so I know. Not to say that they did a bad job but it was not designed by them. Credit should be given toDr Ramlah, Dr Yuzine and Miss Ben.

This means to say the lecturer plays the important key role in developing the student to be active in class..what are the best method? (not just giving assignment). I think Dr.Ruhana & Pn.Aida Shafreena has a very good potential in this active learning basis.

I agree with Mr T as this is the forward thinking type of teaching/learning.
DzZul: It has been a norm for Malaysian students as I think this has to be with the cultural upbringing in Malaysia. Parents ask thier children to follow without giving a reason (just my suggestion). We have tried to change that for a long time but there are still students who cannot change. I remember when I was handling the lab sessions I ask students why this why that just to invoke thinking but they cannot perform at that level. We must change even the mindset of even some of the lecturers as they are still using lecture method of delivery. I applaud to Mr T actually as his classes are more to student doing most of the work and seeking the information themselves rather than giving lectures.

thanks for some suggestions.
on active learning is the best way forward where students are seeking the knowledge and lecturers are the knowledge fascilitator. the attitude of parents-students must change to let their children think of their future etc.

Why are UNIMAS student (e.g.zoology) are so afraid or shy to ask question during weekly colloquium, FYP presentation and even at the conference? Even at postgraduate level, we should start asking question to the presenter. Until now, i have not seen any changes..what are the solution to this problem (as i see, it is a problem)?

some public and private universities conduct roadshows at high schools to promote such programs and I have seen such roadshows. In UNIMAS during konvo this is the time normally where programs set up thier booth to promote these programs.

There must be an exposure on the certain demanded field after the matriculation..nowadays, people just look at Doctor, Engineer and Lawyer as their main target after matriculation. But, not many student know about the other demanded field (e.g. conservation etc.)during their matriculation hood. Because not many have the idea of these type of program .For example, if people take zoology, in people's mind is to work at zoo, forgetting the other specific things like research. Have to overcome this somehow. Maybe each Universiti has their own video clips' about their faculties and programs and the copy is given to each matriculation college. The video clip can be shown during the 1 year period by taking turn (can be arranged).

Normally this is the ideal situation but we cannot do that in Malaysia; reason is every year the intake gets larger. We have to improve; intake increase but quality gets better. DZ is the best example. It started with students less than 10, now its more than 30!! but the quality gets better. We have to strive to get better and not just dwell in the comfort zone so that the quality stays. Active in co-curriculum is can be an added advantage but the knowledge its the integral part.
